There are a number of filters to choose from. Some are submersed, requiring in-pond placement; others are external/out-of-pond. A pump must be used in conjunction with any filter to either pull water through the filter or push water into the filter.
Pond filters are designed to remove dirt, waste, and debris from pond water; and also to provide a stable environment for beneficial bacteria growth to maintain ecology. Sizes of ponds that filters will handle are provided by the manufacturer of each filter. They are usually listed as "up to # of gallons." This is under very ideal situations and is the maximum pond size that the filter should be used with. If there is a large stock of fish, if pond receives over 6 hours of sunlight per day, or if pond is less than 3 feet deep, you should increase pond volume estimate by approximately 25% when selecting a filter. To decrease pond maintenance and increase efficiency, we recommend purchasing slightly larger sizes when possible.
